Villajoyosa – a colourful seaside town on the Mediterranean

Villajoyosa (La Vila Joiosa) is a coastal town located between El Campello and Benidorm, about 50 km from Alicante Airport. The town has preserved a more authentic Spanish character than large tourist resorts, combining everyday local life with a seaside atmosphere and a calmer environment.

The symbol of Villajoyosa is its distinctive colourful houses standing directly along the beach and promenade. In the past, their bright colours helped fishermen recognise their homes from the sea; today they create one of the most recognisable skylines on the Costa Blanca. The old town, with narrow streets, squares and local restaurants, has retained its traditional character and is still inhabited by residents.

Beaches and coastline

The best-known beach is Playa Centro — a wide sandy beach located directly in the town centre beside the promenade with restaurants and cafés. It is a town beach with a very gentle entrance to the sea, making it convenient both for everyday use and for families with children.

There are also quieter stretches of coastline nearby:
• Playa del Paraíso – longer, less crowded and popular with residents
• Playa del Torres – more natural, with pebbles and clear water

The presence of the port means the town is not dependent only on tourism — it functions as a real community with its own daily rhythm.

One of the most characteristic elements of Villajoyosa is its traditional chocolate production. The most famous factory is Valor. Chocolate has been produced here since the 19th century, and the town hosts a chocolate museum and factory shops. Chocolate and fishing form an important part of the town’s identity in Spain.

Villajoyosa functions throughout the year. The town offers schools, medical centres, shops, a weekly market and a TRAM connection with Benidorm and Alicante, allowing convenient daily life without the need for a car.

Restaurants, cafés and bars remain open even in winter. At the same time, the town stays quieter than neighbouring Benidorm, which is why it is often chosen by people looking for a more local lifestyle while still being close to a larger city.
