Guardamar del Segura – nature, dunes and wide beaches
Guardamar del Segura is a coastal town located about 30 km south of Alicante and only 10–15 minutes from Torrevieja. It has a more natural character than many Costa Blanca resorts, as a large part of the coastline consists of protected dune areas and pine forests. For this reason, the town is especially appreciated by people looking for a quieter lifestyle close to the sea and nature.
The most characteristic features of the landscape are the kilometres of sand dunes and the pine parks Parque Reina Sofía and Parque Alfonso XIII, which form a green belt separating the town from the beaches and creating a pleasant microclimate.
Guardamar has some of the widest and most natural beaches on the Costa Blanca. These are long sandy stretches with gentle access to the sea, ideal for walking and everyday use throughout the year.
The best known are Playa Centro, Playa de la Roqueta and Playa Moncayo. The beaches offer promenades, beach bars, lifeguards in season and regularly receive the Blue Flag certification.
The town functions 12 months a year and has preserved a more Spanish character than many tourist destinations. There are schools, medical centres, shops, restaurants and weekly local markets. In the centre there is a traditional pedestrian street with cafés and restaurants, and daily life mainly revolves around the beach, parks and town square.
Guardamar is well connected — Alicante Airport is about 30 minutes away, and Torrevieja, Ciudad Quesada and the golf courses of La Marquesa and La Finca can be reached within a few minutes.
Nearby are the mouth of the Segura River, a marina and the archaeological site Rábita Califal from the Arab period. Cycling paths through the pine forest and dunes are also very popular, especially among year-round residents.
In Guardamar, the market is dominated by apartments near the centre and beach, new residential developments and houses and villas in surrounding urbanisations. The most distinctive area is El Raso, located approx. 2–3 km from the beaches, next to the La Mata lagoon, where new developments dominate, such as apartments, bungalows and low-rise residential complexes in gated communities with swimming pools and green areas. The location is often chosen by buyers who want to live by the sea in a quieter environment than large resorts.
