Villajoyosa – a colourful seaside town on the Mediterranean
Villajoyosa (La Vila Joiosa) is a coastal town located between El Campello and Benidorm, about 50 km from Alicante Airport. The town has preserved a more authentic Spanish character than large tourist resorts, combining everyday local life with a seaside atmosphere and a calmer environment.
The symbol of Villajoyosa is its distinctive colourful houses standing directly along the beach and promenade. In the past, their bright colours helped fishermen recognise their homes from the sea; today they create one of the most recognisable skylines on the Costa Blanca. The old town, with narrow streets, squares and local restaurants, has retained its traditional character and is still inhabited by residents.
Beaches and coastline
The best-known beach is Playa Centro — a wide sandy beach located directly in the town centre beside the promenade with restaurants and cafés. It is a town beach with a very gentle entrance to the sea, making it convenient both for everyday use and for families with children.
There are also quieter stretches of coastline nearby:
• Playa del Paraíso – longer, less crowded and popular with residents
• Playa del Torres – more natural, with pebbles and clear water
• small coves and beaches on the outskirts of the town – ideal for swimming, snorkelling and walks
The beaches have promenades, beach bars, lifeguards in summer and regularly receive the Blue Flag award.
Villajoyosa is still a working port town. A traditional fishing harbour operates here and every afternoon fresh fish and seafood auctions take place. For this reason many restaurants specialise in Mediterranean cuisine, fish dishes and paella. The presence of the port means the town is not dependent only on tourism — it functions as a real community with its own daily rhythm.
One of the most characteristic elements of Villajoyosa is its traditional chocolate production. The most famous factory is Valor. Chocolate has been produced here since the 19th century, and the town hosts a chocolate museum and factory shops. Chocolate and fishing form an important part of the town’s identity in Spain.
Villajoyosa functions throughout the year. The town offers schools, medical centres, shops, a weekly market and a TRAM connection with Benidorm and Alicante, allowing convenient daily life without the need for a car.
Restaurants, cafés and bars remain open even in winter. At the same time, the town stays quieter than neighbouring Benidorm, which is why it is often chosen by people looking for a more local lifestyle while still being close to a larger city.
Location and distances
Benidorm – approx. 10 km
El Campello – approx. 20 km
Alicante – approx. 30 km
Alicante Airport – approx. 35–40 minutes drive
The proximity of Benidorm provides access to shopping centres, hospitals and entertainment, while Villajoyosa itself offers calmer daily life by the sea.
The real estate market includes beachfront and central apartments, new residential developments and villas in surrounding areas. Increasingly, buyers choose Villajoyosa as an alternative to Benidorm — close to the city but with a noticeably more relaxed atmosphere.
Why choose Villajoyosa
• authentic Spanish atmosphere
• working fishing harbour and local gastronomy
• chocolate-making tradition
• sandy and natural beaches
• quieter surroundings than large resorts
• close to Benidorm and Alicante
• active all year round
Villajoyosa is an ideal choice for those who want to live by the sea in a real Spanish town with local life and tradition, while still being only minutes away from the full infrastructure of Costa Blanca North.
