San Javier – a town between the Mar Menor and the Mediterranean Sea
San Javier is a coastal town located in the Region of Murcia, on the Costa Cálida, about 30 minutes from Murcia-Corvera Airport and around one hour from Alicante Airport. Administratively it also includes the seaside areas of Santiago de la Ribera and part of La Manga del Mar Menor, combining everyday town life with direct access to the beaches.
The town functions all year round and has a typically Spanish character. It is not only a tourist resort — most residents live here permanently and there are schools, medical centres, shops, local markets and a wide range of services. The centre offers plazas, restaurants and cafés, and daily life continues independently of the summer season.
The best-known coastal part of the municipality is Santiago de la Ribera. Here you will find long sandy beaches along the Mar Menor lagoon with very gentle access to the water and exceptionally warm sea temperatures. The promenade stretches for several kilometres and is busy throughout the year — residents walk, cycle and enjoy restaurants and cafés by the water. The beaches are especially popular with families with children and those seeking calm swimming conditions.
San Javier is also known for aviation — a military air base and an air academy are located here, and the annual air show attracts visitors from across Spain. Water sports are also popular in the area, including sailing, paddle boarding, kayaking and windsurfing, supported by the calm waters of the Mar Menor.
