Costa Cálida
Costa Cálida (Murcia) – a quieter coastline with warm sea and new developments
Costa Cálida is the coastline of the Murcia region stretching from the area of San Pedro del Pinatar to Mazarrón and Águilas. Compared to Costa Blanca, it is a calmer area and in recent years has increasingly been chosen by people looking for a more relaxed seaside lifestyle, while still offering good infrastructure and access to airports.
The main towns include San Pedro del Pinatar, San Javier, Los Alcázares, Santa Rosalía, La Manga del Mar Menor, Puerto de Mazarrón and Cartagena. The region attracts both permanent residents and investors interested in new development projects.
Costa Cálida literally means “Warm Coast” — and the name is no coincidence. The region is one of the warmest parts of Spain, with a very high number of sunny days and mild winters. There are more than 320 sunny days per year, winter daytime temperatures of around 15–22°C, summer temperatures of around 28–34°C and very few rainy days.
A unique element of the climate is the Mar Menor — a large, shallow saltwater lagoon separated from the Mediterranean Sea by the narrow strip of land known as La Manga. The water warms up faster than in the open sea and remains warm for many months, making the region popular even outside the summer season.
The coastline of Costa Cálida is diverse. On the Mar Menor side, wide, shallow and calm beaches dominate, ideal for families with children and people who prefer gentle swimming conditions. On the Mediterranean side there are more open, natural beaches with waves and cliffs, especially around Mazarrón and Águilas. Many beaches hold Blue Flag certification and offer promenades and restaurants. Water sports, sailing, paddleboarding, kayaking and diving are popular.
The region functions all year round but remains quieter than the southern Costa Blanca. There are schools, clinics, shopping centres, marinas and golf courses (including Roda Golf, Mar Menor Golf, La Serena Golf and golf complexes around Torre Pacheco). Murcia-Corvera Airport is located about 25–35 minutes from most towns, and Alicante Airport can be reached in about an hour.
In recent years Costa Cálida has been developing very dynamically. New apartment complexes, townhouses and villas are being built, often in smaller residential communities with pools and green areas, attracting investors and second-home buyers. The location is popular both for permanent living and rental.
