La Mata
La Mata (Torrevieja) – a peaceful part of the city close to nature and a wide beach
La Mata is a coastal district administratively belonging to Torrevieja, located approximately 40 minutes from Alicante Airport. Although formally part of the city, in practice it functions as a separate, quieter seaside area. It lies a few kilometres from the centre of Torrevieja, offering more space, tranquillity and contact with nature while still providing access to full urban infrastructure.
The greatest advantage of La Mata is its wide, natural beach of about 2 kilometres in length. The main beach is Playa de La Mata, considered one of the most appreciated in this part of the Costa Blanca, with fine sand, dunes and a gentle entrance to the sea. To the north it continues into Playa Les Ortigues leading towards Guardamar del Segura. Along the coastline runs a long promenade with restaurants and cafés, and the area is ideal for daily walks throughout the year, including winter.
The district stands out for its proximity to natural areas. Nearby is the Natural Park Lagunas de La Mata y Torrevieja with salt lakes, walking routes and cycling paths leading both towards the centre of Torrevieja and Guardamar del Segura. Within La Mata there is also Parque del Molino del Agua — a green dune park with wooden walkways, Mediterranean vegetation and recreational areas, which is a popular place for walking and relaxation.
Despite its peaceful character, La Mata functions year-round. There are supermarkets, pharmacies, medical services, restaurants, bars, a sports centre and a weekly market. This allows comfortable living without the need for daily trips to the city centre. At the same time, within a few minutes by car you can reach shopping centres, international schools, Torrevieja hospital and a full range of city services.
The development is lower and less dense than in central Torrevieja. Low-rise residential buildings and apartment complexes dominate, often located within a short distance of the beach. Many properties offer terraces and sea views, which makes the area especially sought after by buyers purchasing a second home in Spain and by investors interested in rentals.
La Mata is chosen by people looking for a calmer lifestyle by the sea — with daily walks, cycling and beach access, without giving up city amenities. It is a suitable location both for a holiday apartment and for regular stays or long-term living.
